An appeal has been launched to raise money to rebuild four Telecentres destroyed in the earthquake and tsunami that struck Samoa in September. The 2020 Communications has launched the appeal with a media statement asking for the public’s help with rebuilding this vital telecommunications infrastructure.“One of the lesser known destructions (in the disaster) was four Telecentres, used by the communities for basic computing and communications with the outside world. These centres have been a key part of the communities for four years and are already sorely missed,” reads the statement.Other groups contributing to the project are InternetNZ, Samoa Ministry of ICT and Computer Services (Samoa) and Microsoft New Zealand staff.It’s estimated the cost of rebuilding each telecentres is around $10,000 and the appeal is for cash or kind to replace computers, printers and cables, as well as help with freight and logistics.
