In this digital age, there’s a new, easy, convenient and fun way to document your lives: ‘vlogs’, or ‘video blogs’. Not only are they free to create; they only require a basic Web cam or video camera in order to film them, and they can easily and instantly be shared with friends and family over the Internet. And it’s always fun to look back on your vlogs a few months or even years down the track to see what you used to look like and what you talked about! But you should definitely make sure you have an adult handy to help if things get too technical, and to make sure that nothing hurtful goes online.
Essentially, you just need to talk about yourself and record it. Some good topics can include what you did that day (at school or a sports event), or what you have coming up that you’re looking forward to (your birthday or Christmas, for example). You can record it all in one take, or you can edit together the best parts using a free online video-editing program like Cuts (www.rifftrax.com/cuts) or Eyespot (eyespot.com) and even add in your own captions and effects.
In order to share your vlogs, you’ll need somewhere to host them. The most common video-hosting site is YouTube (www.youtube.com), and you’ll need to set up an account to upload your videos. You can also link to these videos on other blog sites (such as your LiveJournal page – www.livejournal.com – or your MySpace page – www.myspace.com) by copying the ‘embed’ code and posting it in the body of your blog. Or you can just leave your vlogs on YouTube and link everyone to each new episode by posting the Web address of your video in a Twitter (www.twitter.com) or Facebook (www.facebook.com) update. This way, your Twitter and Facebook friends will be alerted to each new vlog you upload.
Vlogs are fun, and they can be a great way to keep your friends and family up to date with how you are – especially those who live far away. But just remember to keep it nice and friendly, and make sure that an adult gives you the final clearance before posting anything online.
Happy vlogging!
