At the Apple event in San Francisco this morning, Steve Jobs announced the highly anticipated Apple tablet, officially known as the iPad.
Used primarily for games, media, web browsing and apps, similar to the iPhone, the iPad also includes an e-book reader and store, called iBooks. The device can utilise any app from the iPhone store, though developers are welcome to create special iPad apps.
Every iPad has wi-fi, but the iPad 3G model will also feature 3G connectivity. Also announced was that the iPad 3G models are unlocked and there will be international deals available in June.
The device weighs 1.5 pounds (.68 kilos) and is 0.5 inches thick (3.81 cm) with a 9.7-inch (24 cm) IPS display and a 10-hour battery life (with one month’s worth of standby time).

The device also includes a specially designed version of iWork, which will be an app available for download and features multi-touch control with more than 1000 sensors.
The iPad will be available in US in 60 days for the Wi-Fi models, and 90 days for 3G models.Pricing starts at US $499 for the Wi-Fi 16GB model, with the most expensive model being the 64GB 3G enabled iPad at US $829.
The iPad also features a dock with built-in stand, also available with optional keyboard.
Despite rumours, the iPad doesn’t feature a camera or a multi-function OS, but is more like a souped-up iPhone with e-book capabilities.
